Tek-Nique! What does it mean? Graceful, talented, to the beat, on the beat, all about beats! That’s Tek-Nique. Tek-Nique was destined to be the man to move a crowd. A product of Atlanta’s underground music scene, DJ Tek-Nique’s entree’ into the music scene began in the seventh grade when he saw a local DJ perform at a school dance. He said, “I was amazed at how he controlled the crowd.” He’d make their bodies move with the music he played.” One could say Tek-Nique found his calling that day.
During his freshman year in high school, DJ Tek-Nique started making mix tapes and performing at local venues throughout the city. WKKC (Kennedy King College) in Chicago gave him his first break as an on air hot mix jock. The experience opened his eyes to the many facets of radio. Through his determination, Tek-Nique, was given the opportunity to work with the Island Records promotions team. He also provided his skills for Columbia Records. This led to Tek-Nique premiering for Def Jam’s “Survival of the Illest” tour featuring DMX, Onyx, and Redman with the Def Squad.
DJ Tek-Nique , currently a member of chi-town’s elite in the mastery of the “Wheelz of Steel”, has a variety of Hip Hop, House, and Old School House Mix tapes sold in stores throughout the East Coast, South, and Midwest. He has featured on WESE’s Friday night Mix show in Tupelo, Mississippi and WKPO in Madison, Wisconsin as an on-air mix jock. He also had a Saturday evening mix show on WKKC 89.3 fm in Chicago. Tek-Nique has opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, performed for Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College homecoming events, Freak Nic, Jack the Rapper, opening DJ for Kid Capri, toured colleges nationwide as the road DJ for the Laff Jam & Groove Jam concert series, and is the tour DJ for nationally known, grammy award winning rap artist Rhyme Fest. Tek-Nique, who was also a resident DJ at one of Chicago’s hottest clubs, the former Clique Nightclub and The Mint, can now be seen performing at Clubs and other venues throughout Chicago and the Mid-West. Tek-Nique's mixes can be heard nationally on Music Choice, the leading multi-platform music network (TV, Online, Cell Phone) and he can also be streamed live through Focuson The DJ, the first syndicated mixshow channel available to cell phones (Sprint, AT&T, Alltel, & U.S. Cellular). As a member of Chicago's Soul Selector DJ crew, he is also a member of the globally recognized Bum Squad DJz.
Through Tek-Nique’s “hard as steel” persona on the turntables, he acquired the name “The Steel Technician”. His sense of music is what drives his selections when he spins at parties, clubs, and concerts. Having a strong sense of music also strengthened what he believes very strongly in, technique! He exemplifies this proudly when he describes what it means to be a DJ. He says, “When you’re rocking a party, you’ve got to know what to play and when to play it to keep the crowd dancing. It’s all about entertaining the crowd. That’s my purpose as the DJ!!!” His dream, at this level, is to be featured on a syndicated radio mixshow as well as being universally recognized. I think that you would agree that DJ Tek-Nique’s time is now!!!
